Melatonin, Magnesium and L-Theanine
Three different mechanisms, three different jobs — and honest numbers for each.
They aren't alternatives to each other
Melatonin, magnesium and L-theanine end up on the same shelf, so they get compared as if they're competing versions of the same thing. They aren't. One is a hormone, one is a mineral, one is an amino acid, and they do different jobs.
Which one makes sense depends on what's actually going on with your sleep — and that's a question this page can help you think about, not one it can answer for you.
Melatonin: a timing signal
Melatonin is a hormone your body already produces. It rises in the evening and carries a timing signal — it tells your body clock what time it is. Taking it as a supplement adds to that signal.
That's why melatonin is at its most useful when the problem is a clock problem: jet lag, shift work, a sleep schedule that has drifted later than you want it.
What the trials found. A meta-analysis of 19 randomized placebo-controlled trials covering 1,683 people with primary sleep disorders found melatonin reduced the time taken to fall asleep by an average of about 7 minutes, and increased total sleep time by about 8 minutes. Both results were statistically significant. Longer trials and higher doses showed larger effects.
A 2024 systematic review and dose–response meta-analysis of 26 randomized trials, covering 1,689 observations in people with insomnia and healthy volunteers, found the effect increased with dose up to around 4 mg per day, and that when it was taken mattered — the analysis suggested taking it around three hours before the intended bedtime, rather than the 30 minutes commonly used in practice.
Seven minutes is a real effect and it is also a small one. Most melatonin marketing does not lead with it.
Magnesium: a nutrient, not a sedative
Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in a large number of enzymatic reactions, and it contributes to normal muscle and nerve function.* It isn't a hormone, doesn't act on your body clock, and isn't a sedative.
Supplementing it makes sense as nutrition — dietary surveys in the US consistently find many people take in less magnesium than recommended. What it does not do is deliver a nightly sedative effect on demand.

L-theanine: relaxation without sedation
L-theanine is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea. It isn't a hormone and doesn't act on the body clock. It doesn't knock you out; it lowers the volume.*
What the trials found. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis pooling 19 randomized controlled trials across 897 participants found statistically significant improvements in subjective time taken to fall asleep (SMD 0.15), subjective daytime dysfunction (SMD 0.33), and overall subjective sleep quality (SMD 0.43). A separate 2025 systematic review of 13 trials in 550 participants concluded that 200–450 mg per day appears to be a safe and effective way to support healthy sleep in adults — the authors' conclusion, about the ingredient.
The same reviews are clear about the limits: effect sizes small to medium, outcomes largely self-reported, and little evidence that L-theanine increases total sleep time.

What we're not going to tell you
That melatonin is bad for you. It has a large trial literature, a measurable effect, and a clear best use. We don't use it, and that's a formulation choice, not an accusation.
That our formula outperforms melatonin. Nobody has run that trial. The measured effects reported above come from separate literatures with different outcomes and different populations, and putting them in one table is a way to compare what each one is for, not a scoreboard.
Why TAO Daily doesn't contain melatonin
