Magnesium Bisglycinate + L-Theanine: Why These Two, Together

Sleep & Calm has exactly two active ingredients. This is the reasoning behind each — and why we stopped at two.

Open most sleep blends and you'll find eight, ten, twelve ingredients — a sprinkle of everything, a full dose of almost nothing. We went the other way: two ingredients, both at the doses actually used in research, both printed on the front of the bottle.

Here's the thinking.

The two most common reasons winding down is hard

Talk to people about their evenings and the same two patterns come up again and again: a body that won't settle, and a mind that won't stop.

They're different problems, with different upstream causes — which is why Sleep & Calm is built for both: a magnesium shortfall that keeps the nervous system tense, and a mind that keeps racing after lights-out.

Magnesium bisglycinate — for the body that won't settle

Magnesium is involved in hundreds of processes in the body, including the normal function of the nervous system and muscles.* It's also a mineral many adults simply don't get enough of from food — national survey data consistently shows a large share of Americans falling short of the recommended intake.

When magnesium runs low, the nervous system loses one of the minerals it relies on to operate calmly.* Topping up a shortfall isn't forcing anything — it's restoring what the system expects to have.

We chose the bisglycinate form for two reasons:

  • Absorption and comfort. Magnesium bound to glycine is known for being gentle on the stomach — unlike some forms (looking at you, oxide) that are poorly absorbed and famous for digestive side effects.
  • Glycine itself. The carrier isn't dead weight; glycine is an amino acid your body uses, a quiet bonus rather than filler.

And ours is fully reacted — every milligram of magnesium actually bound to glycine, not a blend bulked up with cheaper oxide. 200 mg elemental, from roughly 1.4 g of the compound. (If those two numbers look confusingly different, we wrote a whole guide to reading magnesium labels.)

L-theanine — for the mind that won't stop

L-theanine is an amino acid found almost nowhere in nature except tea leaves. It's the reason a cup of green tea feels focused-but-calm rather than wired.

In studies, L-theanine is associated with promoting relaxation without sedation* — it supports a calm mental state while leaving you fully awake.* That distinction matters: it isn't a knockout agent, and that's exactly why we chose it. It addresses the racing-mind side of the evening — the replaying, the planning, the scrolling brain — without touching the hormonal machinery of sleep itself.

200 mg, the amount commonly used in the research. Not a sprinkle.

Why the combination — and why nothing else

So Sleep & Calm works upstream: magnesium bisglycinate for the mineral shortfall that keeps the nervous system tense, and L-theanine for the racing mind that won't wind down when the lights go off. Nothing that forces sleep — only what removes what stands in its way.

Body and mind, each addressed with one well-dosed ingredient. No hormones. No proprietary blends. No ingredient in the formula that couldn't justify its milligrams.

Two capsules, 30–60 minutes before bed — or whenever the day runs loud. Everything else: 0 mg.
